Cold Calling Qualifies as Bold and Daring

Public speaking ranks pretty high up there as one of the top fears, and I believe cold calling follows swiftly on its heels. Who in their right mind likes rejection, unless they’re a masochist?

Cold calling is definitely not fun but doable by toughening up. It takes a thick skin to not let the rejection or the people’s reactions to the cold calls to affect you negatively and it’s considered really bold for the meek, shy, and introverted.

I don’t enjoy it but it’s not a big stretch outside my comfort zone either. I’ve made cold calls in the past for other companies, but a few years ago I told myself that if I have to do something like that again then I’d do it for myself, my company, or causes I believe in. It’s not worth it to do that for anyone else.

For the last 2 days I’ve been pondering if I should pivot or forge ahead, or perhaps there’s a wall to climb over. I’ve considered all the different things I needed to do.

If someone tells you no, then consider the following tips and advice:

1. Maybe you need a better approach or the right approach. (The offer or pitch must be more convincing.)

2. Go down your list of their competitors or other companies or people that might say yes. (Wouldn’t those companies regret it if the viral campaign did take off? There is always a chance of that, if you don’t believe in your project or don’t think it’ll work out, then why do it?)

3. Maybe they said no because it’s not the right match. I looked at another company that might be a better match and I’ve contacted them. I’ll know in a day or two what they say.

4. A smaller or medium sized or less known company might be better and more willingly to take chances on unknown marketers or projects. After all they’d benefit greatly from the exposure and when the project takes off.

5. Craft your message before the call. If you do this before the call then you’ll stumble less and if the receptionist or assistant asks you to leave a message then you can have them write down word for word what you want them to say. I didn’t do this initially but I learned.

6. Conduct you research first before contacting the company or people you need to reach. Or do more research about the company and the people you’re trying to approach. This helps you craft the right approach and to know or even anticipate their response or objections or questions and better prepare for them.

7. Make sure you have a list of benefits to why you’re calling and why it’s good for them. Sometimes I forget this very important point when I get too excited. No one cares about your project or whatever you’re doing until you show them why it benefits them and that it’s for their own good to listen to you.

8. If one executive in the company doesn’t say yes or does not reply, try approaching another executive or higher up. There is more than one way to approach the company, maybe someone else in the company will be more open-minded and will be willing to hear you out.

9. Try to contact them through other mediums. There’s email, phone, and social media. I’ve tried looking up the names of the executives I’m trying to contact on social media, to see if they have a presence there and if I can get through in other ways.

If they haven’t responded, it’s not a definite no. Maybe they’re busy or the secretary just piled the messages on their desk and they didn’t get to it yet. Or they need more information and they don’t know what it’s about and why they should waste time in talking to you. In that case, the message you left wasn’t clear enough.

I had to make some cold calls to some t-shirt companies to get them to customize some code for me to integrate into my website. The code that they already have doesn’t work for my viral marketing campaign so this is a hurdle.

I wanted to say to them:

A: I’m not trying to sell them anything so just give me 5-10 minutes to hear me out.

B: If the viral marketing becomes a huge success, they’ll get loads of extra traffic they wouldn’t normally get and this doesn’t cost them anything.

C: All I’m asking for and all I want are a bit of modification or customization of the coding of their T-shirt display panels to be integrated into one of my websites. That will take a little bit of time but the small time and effort isn’t a lot to risk considering the reward and especially if I explain the concept and what/how the viral marketing campaign is going to take off and get started. I have the complete plan in place.

After this hurdle, I have 1 more hurdle and then I believe that I am 90% of the way there. That’s exciting stuff, being able to see the final outcome so close at hand.

I have a great programmer. I’m going to let him do his job and I’ll do mine, which is to keep at this and find ways to solve it so I can move on to dealing with the next hurdle.

Be bold and be brave. Figuring out ways to solve problems is why some people get paid the big bucks and problem solving is interesting. Like lateral thinking problems and puzzles, which are fun pastimes. It requires creativity and the stretching of your mind and imagination.
